Your first coin show: a practical visit checklist

Prepare for a first coin show, compare listings, and learn respectful ways to examine coins and ask dealers questions.

Choose the visit before choosing a purchase

Start with a show whose location and public hours you can confirm. Read the listing and its official source, check admission and parking separately, and decide how long you want to stay. A missing price means unknown admission, rather than free entry. Our finder can narrow dates and show known free admission.

Take a look around first

The American Numismatic Association recommends becoming familiar with a local show and talking with club members. Walk the room before settling at one table. Ask collectors about dealer specialties and use the visit to learn, even if you leave without buying.

Ask before handling a coin

Wait until the dealer is available and ask permission before touching an item. Handle an unencapsulated coin by its edges. Give an ongoing transaction space, and return to a busy table later. These are the ANA’s suggested ways to protect coins and respect dealers’ time.

Bring a short checklist

Write down the types of coins you want to learn about, a spending limit you are comfortable with, and questions about condition or authenticity. The ANA recommends a loupe for examining detail. Ask the dealer how to use it before inspecting an item. Avoid making a purchase simply because you feel rushed.

Keep the useful details

Save the event on this device, add the date to your calendar, and check its source again before travelling. If the listing has changed, use its correction link with a public source so our operator can review it.
